A Hundred Indecisions by Janis Cortese
Frodo/Sam
so many lotr fics take place in the shire before fellowship, and i can understand the temptation, especially reading this. sam and frodo are so goddamn young, and you just want to protect them from all that is to come, from frodo getting broken. Janis writes that she never finished the books. if that's the case, she could've fooled me. there's so much good, relevant foreshadowing in here. and it's well-written, angsty and doles out just the right amount of sex. ah yeah. when i finished this fic i leaned back with a satisfied sigh and the feeling i always get when i've read work by an author who has that certain something -- a natural, deft handle on her characters and the material.
not to mention that anyone who quotes eliot's "wasteland" and then makes such a beautiful story to go with it deserves cookies.
Barleywine by Ailei Merry/Pippin
this is just hot and sweet and sugary, and i can hear their movie voices perfectly.
hobbits doing unhobbitlike things in very hobbitlike ways... and something ailei does adeptly -- capturing pip's love of reasonable, solid ol' merry.

here be hobbitslash -- a little about my love of lotr...
i fell in love with the hobbit and bilbo baggins in third grade and subsequently with the lord of the rings, and if my childhood familiarity with star trek explains my love of sci-fi, then tolkien explains my love of reading. so, as one can imagine, i was just a little more than excited to see peter jackson put my love on the big screen. from about 4th to 6th grade i had read the lotr trilogy yearly, and so i had well-worn, well-loved visions in my head for each character and each individual field, tree and rock in the books, and so it's peter and the cast and crew of the movies that i have to thank for opening up this tolkien purist's heart to other people's interpretations.

Unmade by 'rith
Elrond/Isildur
i have reservations about hugo weaving's movie elrond, but such reservations aside, this fic most closely parallels my own feelings upon watching the mount doom scene with isildur and elrond in the first movie -- they totally had angsty, warrior, we're-gonna-die-in-this-war sex. and rolling with this interpretation can, done as well as 'rith does it, be poignant and as epic as tolkien's novels themselves.
