it's Kirk/Spock-centric around here but not entirely so.

the way i look at it, i was destined to be a trekkie from the moment i was born. my dad loved "st: tos" back in the day, and so it was only natural that when "st: next generation" came onto the scene he should share it with his oldest daughter. some of my fondest childhood memories are of our weekly viewings of "next generation." the penchant i have for sci-fi storytelling can be traced back to those days, as well as other things -- for instance, i'll always remember learning the meaning of the word "babble" from captain jean-luc picard himself...

when i was young, i loved data. then when "st:ds9" came out i loved julian bashir, finally realizing that the opposite sex could be hott. and when "voyager" came along it was doctor/seven that i secretly campaigned for, though very few people see the sweetness of that pairing as much as i once did. but at long last i discovered "the original series" on the sci-fi channel and since then can see nothing but kirk/spock. star trek is a fandom in which, unlike with other fandoms i love, i can only really deal with a few different pairings. i know it's limiting, but i can't seem to help it. so most of the fics here will be kirk/spock-related -- with a little garak/bashir and picard/q sometimes thrown in for slashy flav-ah.

And In The Darkness Bind You... by Greywolf Kirk/Spock

i've always thought greywolf was the master of hurt/comfort fic, and this story is one of the reasons why. it's beautifully written, and it's like this burning slow ache. it's hot and angsty and so *very* spock in all the right ways.

this one just pushes all my buttons. mmmgood.

Fire on the Mountain by Greywolf
Kirk/Spock

no buts about it. i read this fic when i'm horny, but the reason it's so good in *that* way is all due to how greywolf paints every detail -- how the sunlight was, the softness of spock's hair, how jimbo feels this overwhelming love for his stoic science officer, and this time it's kirk, not spock, that greywolf gets just right.

Bitter Glass by Killashandra
Kirk/Spock

okay, there can be no joking about this story. Killashandra is the best fan fic author i've ever read, and i don't say that lightly either. and, being that this is the best story she's ever written, well, you put two and two together, and you realize you've got what i call a 'heart attack story' on your hands.

but you're allowed to take all my praise with the grain of salt you're deserved because, after all, Kirk/Spock is my OTP if ever i had one. which i'd like to think i don't.

(but that'd be lyin'.)

so here it is, the story that even now affects how i watch Star Trek. the whole thing just blows me away: painfully well-written, totally and completely right-on in characterization (and not just of K & S but ohsogood of McCoy, too, whose characterization's importance in any K/S fic i cannot stress enough), the slow passing of years, the interaction between the Big Three, the things left unsaid that you can even *see* right there in the actual episodes and movies... yeah, it's mostly just it's goddamn believability. holy mother. i'm an incredibly demanding reader, and the only complaint i have is that i never really liked the title.

(warning: to really appreciate it, be familiar with the 6 'original series' movies). as anything well-crafted does tend to do, it will take a chunk outta yer life. it is long, and it is intense, and it is so worth it.

Younger Times by Rae Trail Kirk/Spock

the title is the fic in this case...finding love where you didn't expect it but in the most loved of friends -- sweet and light, it goes down like sparklin' cider.

The World Turned Upside Down by Jenna Hilary Sinclair
Kirk/Spock

there are some really great, great passages in this. kirk is well-drawn, and i can never resist a good character study of the captain. rae examines what it's like to hold up that much responsibility, and yet she doesn't overstate it.

the flashbacks are poignant, and the diction can hit you in the gut. there's one particular scene in this that makes me keep coming back to read it again -- kirk and his duty...

i could do without the whole vulcan healer debacle, but that's me. otherwise, lovely.

A Treatise on the Principles of Relativity by Mosca
Bashir/? (just trust me; you'll like it)

i always liked the fact that mosca, such a good *reccer* of fic, also wrote this sharply perfect gem, one that pings just right on every level. this is just a pleasure to read, tight and coiled and full of real life.

and i can't help it. i've always loved the pretty doctor, and mosca grabs all the right things about him: he is so *young* in a lot of ways -- loud and overconfident -- but then he turns and is thoughtful and quiet and brilliant.

and he's pretty. we musn't forget the pretty and the accent and. did i mention the pretty?

Paths Not Taken by Selena
Garak/Bashir

the best use of the formatted "Five Things That Never Happened To Such and Such" fic I've ever seen...because really, what is Garak and Bashir's canon relationship if not a study in the what-if scenario? Selena's five different takes are by turns chilling, moving and heartbreaking--and all incredibly well-written.
Cover of Night by Killashandra Kirk/Spock

kirk remembers, and his memories ache. some of the vignettes here are like some kind of sweet pulling wine.

'slow but exceeding fine,' as the title of an hp fic goes. that would be it.

"Forgive me," I whispered, meaning for all of it, for my hands on him and for the choice we were making.

"Yes. And I," was all he said.

Illogic by Sigrid
Spock/McCoy

this fic is really a tribute to the kindness and cussedness of leonard h. mccoy. it's also one of the only fics that convinces me spock doesn't really want the pants off kirk but off of the dear doctor instead. "don't give me those baby blue eyes," indeed.

the dialogue is pitch-perfect -- funny and sweet, and you can really see mccoy's familiar mannerisms through spock's eyes.

not to mention the best last line ever.
